Readers: What would you miss?

– Who made your tears well up with stunning and heart-breaking photographs of an Iraqi boy who journeyed to the United States to have his face repaired after he was nearly killed by a mortar attack in Al-Fallujah in his home country. (Hint: The Mercury News’ Pauline Lubens.)

– Who gave you your Morning Buzz every day and left you laughing even at yet another outrageous stunt by Barry Bonds. (Hint: The Mercury News’ John Ryan.)

– Who broke your heart and warmed your heart and gave you the chance to help your neediest neighbors? (Hint: The Mercury News’ Wishbook.)

– Who gave you the best, well, most entertaining, relationship advice on the planet in Male Call? (Hint: We’d tell you, but we’d have to kill you.)

These are just some of the writers and photographers you know. It takes a fully staffed team of page designers, copy editors, headline writers and support staff behind the scenes to bring you a daily newspaper and continually updated Internet site. Please support us in our effort to Save the Merc.

I love this paper, and if it were to change, I certainly would cancel my subscription.

Kelli Delong, San Jose

San Jose and the rest of the Knight Ridder orphans are test cases on where the future of newspapers are heading. For the sake of a vibrant democracy, we should hope for an owner who values news gathering and the public trust that is inherent in ownership in the Fourth Estate.

Jeff Beideman, Doylestown, PA

Any new owner of the San Jose Mercury News must preserve the community's expectations for its daily newspaper. If the San Jose Mercury News is spun off to another entity, I will cancel my subscription of over 35 years. Please don't let our community down.

Bill Brill, San Jose

Should employees buy Knight Ridder papers?  Personally, I'm rooting for 'em. ... Why not with the workers? It would certainly be a welcome development to see people who actually work in the journalism business have some real influence over their place of work. They understand that newspapers have to be more than black ink on dead trees.

Craig Newmark
founder Craig's List

The Merc is the daily paper of the technology community world-wide.

Neil Barton, London

The people of the bay area will be much poorer if all the newspapers in the bay area are owned and operated by a single publisher. A sale to Media News, which already own many newspapers in the Bay Area, will stiffle the free flow of ideas and result in increased advertising rates and a lower quality publication since there will be virtually no competition. The fact the the Hearst Corporation, publisher of the San Francisco Chronicle is assisting Media News in the purchase of the Knight Ridder newpapers clearly shows that a policy of cooperation between the two companys is an intention to monopolize the print media of the entire region and stiffle all possibility of competition.

Rt. Rev. James Babcock, Placentia

"Our" paper must be saved for our very special community

Monsignor Eugene J. Boyle,
Palo Alto

As a subscriber, I read the SJMN every day and appreciate its local and national coverage.

John Beeley, Palo Alto

As a resident in this area for over 50 years, I'm deeply concerned about the prospects of the San Jose Mercury becoming another watered-down newspaper that sacrifices journalistic integrity for corporate greed. Let's prove that San Jose has the resolve to avert this regrettable scenario.

Michael Zampiceni, Sunnyvale

It would be an outstanding move for the employees to purchase the paper. I applaud and totally support my former colleagues in their noble effort to continue providing us with the highest quality journalism.

Susan Ditz, Pescadero

I do not want the Mercury News to dissolve or degrade in any way! I am a journalism student at Homestead High School in Cupertino who reads the Merc daily; I hope the future of the Merc remains put in the Silicon Valley, and give my full support to save it.

Eric Jin, Sunnyvale

The Mercury is a great newspaper that I read on a regular basis. It
covers a distinct area that the San Francisco Chronicle and other like papers do not. Please help keep this staple of the South Bay and Peninsula alive and kicking.

Timothy Wagstaffe, Palo Alto

I grew up in Sunnyvale and now live in Campbell. The Mercury News has been a part of my life for 40 years. It is a part of the fabric of this community, and no one covers our daily lives like The Mercury News. Please keep our paper going.

Barbara Lenci, Campbell

I support your efforts 100%. I would much rather rely on a newspaper owned and managed by professional journalists rather than a group not satisfied with double digit profits.

Debra Witter, MD, Fremont

The Mercury News has been the eyes and the ears of Santa Clara County for a century and a half. As a reader and as a journalism student at SJSU, I am very concerned about the community of San Jose losing its voice.

Emmanuel Lopez, Santa Clara

Subscribers since 1978. The Merc is a mainstream newspaper that reports on issues and individuals of importance to the Mexican American Community.

Guadalupe & Linda Ortiz,

San Jose

We consider the Merc to be a priceless community asset; without the Merc's deep and insightful reporting, San Jose's city government would be even more secretive instead of on its way to showing other cities how citizen information and power should be organized.

J F & Laurel Renish, San Jose

The Merc has done a great job covering this diverse area--please keep on doing it!

Judy Williams Stark, Los Gatos

The Mercury News has distinguished itself as an essential institution in this community. The prospect of a weakened, stripped-down newspaper controlled by disinterested out-of-town owners is simply not acceptable.

George Sampson
News Director, 1590 KLIV, San Jose

The Mercury News is an invaluable resource for the university, its faculty and students.

Jonathan Roth,
Chair, History Department,
San Jose State University

Do you realize how lucky we are to have the editorial excellence and the quality of reporting at the international, national, and regional levels that we enjoy in print and online with The Merc?

Margaret Cobb Dastrup,
 Santa Clara

My morning coffee and the Merc start off my morning with great articles. They keep us informed of many events and problems that need to be addressed. We need our newspaper and all of its in-depth news.

Angie Y Carrillo, San Jose

The Mercury News has evolved into the perfect mix for this city: sophisticated high-tech reporting with a hometown flavor. Please preserve this paper's excellence!

Victoria Igel, San Jose

This is an exceptional newspaper of record - it deserves all support.

Christine Finn,  London

It's the only paper I'll read. Great stories and easy to read. Please save.

Annalisa Ludwig, San Jose

As a long time subscriber I feel the Merc has served its community very well and without the insightful and strong investigative reporting it embodies the South Bay would be losing a valuable voice

Susan Suffel, San Jose

It's time for corporations in America to have other goals and charters than just serving the shareholders and the bottom line. I highly value the local news that the Mercury News provides and don't want to see that coverage deteriorate with a potential re-focusing under new ownership

.Oluf Nissen, Cupertino

I have been a subscriber to the Merc for over 20 years, and was always very proud of the quality and content of our local paper.  Please keep the journalistic integrity consistent!

 Steve Weirauch, San Jose

It's one of the few quality newspapers left. Corporate America is into union busting. It's not about quality it's about control.

Suz Floethe &
Meg Sanders,
Milpitas

Were the San Jose Mercury News to be acquired by a new owner intent on exacting "savings" by depopulating and deskilling the newsroom, great harm would be done to the civic vitality of the entire South Bay.

 John McManus
Grade the News

The Mercury News not only provides a quality newspaper, but they provide hopes and dreams for younger generations. While taking part in The 2005 Mosaic Workshop, sponsored by the Mercury News, I was able to find my passion and learn so much about myself, and my community. The Mercury News is such a big part of our community, and I hope that whoever holds the Merc's future in their hands protects its heart, and its quality.

Nicole Marquez
San Jose

My husband and I start each day with the Merc. It's the best newspaper in the Bay area. We want it to stay that way.

Candace Danielson

"I hope you will give fair consideration to a proposal that may be offered by the Newspaper Guild-Communications Workers of America and Yucaipa Companies. Their proposal has considerable support in the communities served by these newspapers and from prominent leaders in the news industry."

"I ask for your support in ensuring they have all the relevant information they need to make a fair offer. An open process is one that would most benefit your company and shareholders."

in a letter to
McClatchy CEO Gary Pruitt

"The owners of the Mercury News are not only those with a controlling interest in its shares; the owners are also all of us, citizens of the Silicon Valley, who, over many years, have seen "our" newspaper serve the public good. The Mercury News shone a light on our valley's needs, especially helping us remember those who were left behind when our valley's economy rocketed."

Tom Campbell
Dean, U.C. Berkeley
Haas School of Business

"The Mercury News is the voice of the tech community and an essential part of the innovation engine that is Silicon Valley.  Its internal culture of excellence, courage, and plain old great writing pervades every department.  Our success and its are intertwined."
